Under the Choko Tree By Nevin Sweeney

Choko Tree Friends - Melliodora

In April this year (2017) we were lucky enough to get a house and garden tour of David Holmgren’s permaculture property, conducted by the man himself and his partner, Su Dennett. David, along with Bill Mollison is the co-developer of the Permaculture concept.

Melliodora is a 8700m2 or 2¼ acre property in the cool moist climate of Hepburn, near Daylesford in central Victoria. David and Su purchased it in 1985 and during the last 30 years they have developed the property into permaculture demonstration property. The property boasts a mud brick, passive solar house, and also has a studio and “tea house” on the property. There is an area for intensive vegetable culture and an extensive orchard with 120 mixed fruit and nut trees. There are two dams on the property, a larger main one and smaller secondary one. There are also chooks!

The property is well worth a tour and David and Su run these through their website on the first Sunday of the month from September to May.
