Wild Herbs - Catsears

Catears - hypochoeris species, usually H. radicata or common catsears with hairy leaves or H. glabra with smooth leaves which is (oddly enough) called smooth catsear. It is also known as flatweed, and is most commonly confused with dandelion, unless you see the two together in which case the differences become immediately obvious.

The plant has long narrow leaves with a wavy margin, very unlike the jagged tooth-like leaf edges of dandelion. Their yellow flowers are supported on narrower stems than dandelion which can be unbranched or with one or two branches.

Catsears is a very common weed of lawns and other open spaces, we tend to find it in the local reserves as well as our back yard.

Both Catsears and dandelion are edible so confusion is not a worry, but the flavour profile is different. The flavour of raw catsears is fairly mild with perhaps a hint of pepperiness, but it almost totally lacks the bitterness of dandelion, even when grown in full sunlight.  To make it palatable, dandelion needs to be grown in low light or blanched for a while before consumption, but this is not required for catsears.
