If you want to see what a creative person can do with a small amount of land, this productive garden is for you! Lucinda lives in a townhouse in a northern suburb of Sydney, and while her townhouse yard is 107m² all up, it includes a garden area of approximately only 70m². She has also been given permission to turn some of the common land (about 60m² worth) into the fertile and productive oasis it is today.
She moved into her townhouse in 2005, started composting and became involved with bush regen and observed what was going on in her garden. In 2006 she discovered permaculture and joined Permaculture Sydney North, doing an intro to permaculture in March 2007, followed by a PDC in September 2007. Most of the bones of the garden were installed in the time between April 2007 and April 2008.
However, the creative process never ends. Her mini-aquaponics system went in late last year; that has been the most recent thing, where she converted her pipe pot stands from holding soil but having wicking strips going from the pots into water sitting in the pipes, to the current soilless system. She has had to be creative to make use of all the light she can get, the area is well treed shading is a big issue for her.
Lucinda’s garden is a great inspiration to those with only a tiny amount of land. She opens every year for International Permaculture Day, and if you are in Sydney, her garden is definitely worth a look!
