Under the Choko Tree By Nevin Sweeney

Choko Tree Friends - Penrith Valley Learning Centre

Penrith valley learning centre has a reasonable size garden which has a number of points of interest, but the photos were taken towards the end of 2019 when the drought and hot weather were still wreaking havoc in the area.

They make extensive use of raised beds based on commercial corrugated steel and wooden designs as well as more DIY style designs using cut off IBCs (which have been constructed as wicking beds), tractor tyres and even the back of a ute.

There is an anti-aviary which houses five raised beds and other plants including a passionfruit vine. The concept of the anti-aviary is that it is constructed in the same fashion as a regular aviary (mesh over a frame, in this case made from wood) but instead of keeping birds in, the anti-aviary keeps the birds out. This allows vegetable and fruit to be grown without interference from the local bird life, or even animals such as possums.

There is also a sizeable chicken keeping area, drums for holding liquid manure and a small seed raising area.
