Under the Choko Tree By Nevin Sweeney

Choko Tree Friends - Cambridge Park Primary School

There are a number of areas of interest in this school, due mainly to the ingenuity, passion and just hard work of a teacher, Luke Giblin and the Enviro Ed Teacher, Jane Wades.

There is an area is at the back of the school, down behind the playing area where there is a 3-sisters garden (corn, beans and squash) being started up and an innovative use of recycled milk crates and hessian bags.

Further towards the front of the school is the Upcycle Garden, which uses the backs of utes to make gardens, an old freezer converted into a worm farm and a very attractive ornamental garden in an old dinghy.

The central part of the garden is a series of raised beds and wicking beds made from recycled IBCs, which is next to an assembly area near the hall, where annual vegetables and fruit trees (primarily citrus) are grown. This is adjacent to a future aquaponics set up (not shown) and a beautiful and calming native garden, complete with meeting area.

On the eastern edge of the school near the teacher's car park, there is also a small strawbale garden.

It has been a tough, dry year and a hot spring and summer, but Luke has, with the help of the students, been able to keep things running. The water tanks have been installed recently and he is currently working on a demonstration aquaponics system.
